The automotive refinish market gains its first ChemCycling® products from BASF Coatings

BASF coatings recently revealed their new product lines which were created for the automotive industry. This product is BASF’s next generation of clearcoats and not only do they push forwards the concept of sustainability in the industry, but they also highlight and utilise the company’s unique ChemCycling technology.

The new and innovative product is manufactured out of recycled feedstock and they have been specifically designed to boost body shop efficiency and productivity, whilst also contributing to the circular economy and reducing carbon emissions. These products are being marketed under BASF’s  premium brands Glasurit and R-M.

It is already clear that these products will be successful within the industry, as it is the first product within the refinish market to ‘leverage unique, advanced ChemCycling technology’ and it is also the first product of its kind to be produced under BASF’s mass balance approach. Furthermore, these premium clearcoats are made out of recycled waste tyres and this means that all the products involved in the manufacturing process are prevented from entering landfills or incineration. The recycled feedstock which has been used in this process is ‘attributed to the certified Ccycled clearcoats through a mass balance approach: BASF Coatings’ Glasurit AraClass A-C-24 Eco Balance and R-M Race Finish-R eSense clearcoats are the first automotive refinish products that utilize this technology.’

On top of the benefits mentioned so far, the product brings a multitude of other benefits including, a drying speed which makes fast processing possible, as the coating dries within twenty minutes, once heated to 40 degrees Celsius. This means that the production time is lowered, whilst the energy consumption is also lowered and altogether this causes an improvement in efficiency and reduced environmental impact. This ability is particularly useful when it comes to electric vehicles, as it means that the vehicles do not need to be exposed to excessive heat.

Senior Vice President, Global Automotive Refinish Coatings, BASF, Chris Titmarsh, commented, “At BASF Coatings, we’re always pushing what’s possible, empowering body shops to lead the change with sustainable technologies that are unique to the market. With our exclusive ChemCycling, our vision is to support a circular economy by reducing the use of fossil raw materials, minimising waste and cutting CO2 emissions in the value chain. We’re here today making a different with our new products, replacing a share of the fossil resources with recycled feedstocks, and that is a huge step towards less environmental impact, less emissions and less waste.”
