Bendix Earns DOE Recognition for Sustainable Manufacturing

Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC (Bendix) announced on 13 April that its Huntington, Indiana manufacturing operation has earned a 2023 Better Project award from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The award recognizes Bendix’s efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its engine vibration damper production.

Bendix’s Huntington facility produces engine vibration dampers, which are used to reduce torsional vibration on engine crankshafts to prevent shaft failure and reduce noise. The facility’s new, environmentally friendly manufacturing process uses a water-based solution to clean raw materials, which reduces the use of chemicals and cuts carbon emissions. In addition, the facility has installed an advanced wastewater recovery system that recycles up to 40% of treated water back into production.

As a result of these efforts, Bendix’s Huntington facility reused 500,000 gallons of water in 2022 and cut carbon emissions associated with the old processes. The facility’s sustainability efforts have also earned it recognition from the DOE’s Better Plants program, which honors partners for their innovative, industry-leading work in energy efficiency, water efficiency, emissions reduction, and waste reduction.

“We are proud to be recognized by the DOE for our efforts to reduce the environmental impact of our manufacturing operations,” said Maria Gutierrez, Bendix senior director, environmental, social, and governance (ESG). “Sustainability is a core value at Bendix, and we are committed to continuous improvement in this area.”

This is the third consecutive year that the DOE’s Better Plants program has honored Bendix. In 2022, Bendix Huntington earned a Better Project award for its 1.168-megawatt solar installation, and the company overall earned a 2021 Better Practice award for its Zero Waste to Landfill self-certification process.

Bendix is a leading global supplier of commercial vehicle technologies, including braking, safety, and electronic systems. The company is headquartered in Avon, Ohio, and employs approximately 29,000 people worldwide.
