New Biosurfactants have been created by Evonik

Evonik Coating Additives has recently launched a brand new biosurfactant which has been created with the intention that it will be ideal for coating and ink formulations. These two products are called TEGO Wet 570 Terra and TEGO Wet 580 Terra and both of them include an excellent sustainability profile, which will aid them in their aim to change the paints, coatings and inks industry.

The process that is used to create these biosurfactants, involves microorganisms being added to a unique fermentation process. Also, these biosurfactants are made up of 100% natural resources and furthermore they have low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and they are biodegradable. These environmental benefits are the reason why these coatings are specifically designed for use within waterborne coatings and inks.

When it comes to decorative paints and pigments, the new biosurfactants will provide improved wetting of organic and inorganic pigments, whilst it is also able to act as a beneficial co-dispersants. Along with this, they also improve the wetting speed of pigments and fillers and they also make the grinding step more efficient, whilst simultaneously reducing time and energy consumption. Plus the biosurfactants support good hight power performance, without the need to compromise film strength and finally, these new products eliminate defects in sensitive binders, whilst also increasing bio-based content.

For industrial coatings, TEGO Wet 570 Terra and TEGO Wet 580 Terra provide excellent substrate wetting for protective coatings and it also improves pigment wetting and dispersion. Furthermore, the products have the ability to make sure that the optimum colour properties are brought out and they also improve storage stability and provide excellent corrosion resistance.

Finally, the advantages provided to printing inks include their ability to improve wetting on a multitude of substrates and the products also speed up and improve the wetting of pigments and fillers. Furthermore, they improve the biodegradability of the final products.

Head of Coating Additives at Evonik, Elias Lacerda, commented, “With our TEGO Wet 570 Terra and TEGO Wet 580 Terra, we offer our customers completely new high-performance solutions that also drive the green transformation in the paint and coatings industry.”

Head of decorative coatings at Evonik Coating Additives, Katina Kiep, added, “Our TEGO Wet 570 Terra and TEGO Wet 580 Terra are suitable for waterborne decorative paints, industrial and transportation coatings and inks. Their unique properties and the fact that they meet the stringent standards of the EU Ecolabel make them an ideal choice for our customers to formulate coatings for a sustainable future.”

Head of sustainability at Evonik Coating Additives, Tim-Frederic Sloot, mentioned, “These new products not only demonstrate our strong innovation capabilities, but also our commitment to driving positive change in the development of environmentally friendly solutions and setting new standards for additives in the coatings and inks industry.”
