Polartec has started using Biolon in its Pro-Performance fabrics

Polartec is a designer of innovative textiles and their most recent project has involved developing a plant-based nylon and finding a way to incorporate it into the companies Pro-Performance fabrics.

Biolon is the plant-based nylon which Polartec has created to incorporate into its Power Shield and Power Stretch Pro performance fabrics, which will account for 45-48% of the nylon content in both fabrics. Biolon is a renewable, non-GMO plant-based nylon with multiple benefits. The benefits include this new nylon being closer to Nylon 6,6 than most other recycled nylon alternatives, plus it could be viewed as better than Nylon 6,6 as it has a 50% lower carbon footprint than Nylon 6,6.

The overall benefit of using this innovative alternative to Nylon is that it aligns with Polartec’s ambition to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels and reduce their carbon footprint. The company’s other aim with this adaptation to a greener manufacturing process is to increase recycled and bio-inputs throughout its range.

The director of product management at Polartec, Karen Beattie commented, “We are elevating our sustainable material capabilities by exploring new fibres, adopting advanced manufacturing techniques, fostering innovation, and collaborating with partners,” she continued, “This comprehensive approach ensures that Polartec continues to lead in creating high-performance textiles that prioritise environmental responsibility and contribute to a more sustainable future.”

This shows that this new design is a step forwards for this company and for the environment, as the greener manufacturing process this company is choosing to adopt, by switching to a renewable material, will have many benefits for the company, the product, the consumers and the environment.
