Volkswagen finds a way to create a sustainable material to replace leather out of industrial hemp
Volkswagen and Revoltech, the German startup company, have recently entered a cooperation which is dedicated to researching ways that industrial hemp could be used to develop a variety of sustainable materials. One large aim within this project, is to create a sustainable material which would be available for use in Volkswagen models by 2028.
The material that the companies have been working with consists of 100% bio-based hemp and it also uses residues from the regional hemp industry.
Volkswagen has stated that, ‘it can be produced in existing industrial plants and recycled or composted at the end of its service life in an automobile.’
So far the innovative material, which has now been presented to customers, has received excellent and positive feedback.
Head of Strategy at the Volkswagen brand, Andreas Walingen, commented, “The sustainable use of resources is a key pillar in our Accelerate strategy and is therefore firmly anchored in our mindset and our actions. Our clear goal is to fuse customer wishes, sustainability requirements and corporate interests.”
He also mentioned, that ‘the cooperation between Revoltech and Volkswagen was a good example of the benefits to be gained by startups and established companies from the targeted combination of their respective strengths – with the goal of developing new features for use in automobiles as swiftly as possible.’
